Celebrating the life of
Mamie Greene Kinder
August 06, 1940 - June 03, 2013
Mamie Greene Kinder, 72, died at home on Monday, June 3, 2013. Mamie was born and educated in Savannah. Mamie graduated second in her class at Beach High School in 1958. Prior to earning a degree in English Language and Literature from Savannah State University in 1962, Mamie made her mark on that campus as a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and as a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Always a scholar and lover of books, Mamie proceeded to earn additional degrees in library science from both Atlanta University and the University of Wisconsin. Mamie devoted her life to sharing her love of literature. She served as a public librarian in Brooklyn, New York but spent the majority of her career as a public school librarian and educator for the Prince Georges County School District in Maryland. After her retirement in the late 1990's, Mamie returned to her beloved Savannah. Mamie was preceded in death by her parents Robert Greene and Emma Norman Greene and her loving sister Barbara Fields Simms. Mamie is survived by her only niece, Nicki Mitchell of California and her husband Jeffery; adoring grandnieces Nia and Joy Mitchell; devoted uncle, Rev. Rufus King, Jr.; caregiver and loving cousin Rosetta Hamilton, and a host of other local family members and friends sprinkled throughout Savannah and the entire East Coast.
Visitation will take place at Fox and Weeks Hodgson Chapel on Sunday, June 16 from 4PM-7PM.
Funeral service will take place on Monday, June 17 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Savannah at 11 AM.
Remembrances may be made c/o Rosetta Hamilton, 3908 Crane St., Savannah, GA 31405
Entombment: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park Mausoleum.
I am very sorry I am so late sending my condolences. Mamie and I had some wonderful times together, and when Mamie left Maryland to go back to Savannah I really missed her, but I kept in touch with her by phone. When I received the news of her passing, I really felt an emptiness, because so many of my close friends have passed in the last 2 years. Effie Lancaster

Still adjusting to this absence. I miss our phone chats. Even if they were as mundane as discussing what you had for dinner and what you WISH you'd had, those were our chats and I'll treasure the memories.

Second to my mother, Auntie Mamie was the closest woman to me. Her tenderness was a constant and I don't know a time that she ever raised her voice at me. She was proud of me over the littlest things I did and it was pure and genuine pride. I will miss her dearly and am grateful to have had her touch my life.
